The Tzolkin
The Tzolkin (meaning "count of days") is the 260-day sacred calendar at the heart of Mayan timekeeping. Its 20 day signs and 13 tones interlock like two gears, each advancing one tooth per day, producing 260 unique day-sign-and-tone combinations before the cycle repeats.
The Long Count
The Long Count is the Mayan system for tracking vast stretches of time. It counts days from a mythological starting point — August 11, 3114 BCE (4 Ahau 8 Cumhu) — using five nested units: baktun (144,000 days), katun (7,200), tun (360), uinal (20), and kin (1).
The GMT Correlation
This calculator uses the GMT (Goodman-Martinez-Thompson) correlation — the standard academic correlation that maps Mayan calendar dates to the Gregorian calendar. Under GMT, the Long Count zero date corresponds to Julian Day Number 584283, and December 21, 2012 maps to 4 Ahau and Long Count 13.0.0.0.0.
